Associate's Degree (AA or AS): Recruits can receive a 1% education bonus upon Academy graduation.
Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS): Recruits can receive a 3% education bonus upon Academy graduation.
Bonuses cannot be combined. The new hire will receive the highest applicable bonus based on their highest qualification.
A member can apply for the language incentive bonus after completing their 12 month probationary period as a Firefighter II.

Sick Leave & Disability Benefits
Employees receive 12 days of 100 percent paid sick leave, five days at 75 percent, and five days at 50 percent, upon hiring and each year while employed. Employees may accumulate up to 100 days at 100 percent, 75 percent, and 50 percent paid sick leave. Employees are eligible for a service-connected disability retirement beginning on the date of graduation from basic training.
Vacation And Holidays
Employees receive 16 days of vacation per year after one year of service, 24 days after ten years, and 25 days after 31 years. Every firefighter also receives a total of 13 paid floating holidays per year; one day every four weeks.
Pension Plan
The City has an independent pension system to which both the employee and the City contribute.
Deferred Compensation
Additional retirement financial planning can be accomplished through regular contributions to a deferred compensation plan. LAFD Firefighters have the option between various deferred compensation plans.
